By The Rivers
released their debut single One Word with Kompyla Records Ltd on Saturday October 8 2011 ahead of their nationwide tour with 2-Tone legends, The Specials. The Leicester six-piece band had spent that previous summer storming through sets on stages at high-profile festivals up and down the UK. From the BBC Introducing Stage at Scotland’s T in the Park to Y-Not in Derbyshire, Nozstock in Herefordshire and Leicester’s Summer Sundae and Strawberry Fields festivals, they built their way up to the Specials tour which began with two sellout dates in Wolverhampton on October 11 and 12. The tour took them on an amazing journey playing venues such as Glasgow SECC, Manchester Apolo,
Nottingham Arena, Brixton Academy and Alexandra Palace. By The Rivers were formed in Leicester in the Spring of 2010 by Nile Barrow and Jordan Birtles. It was with a strong passion for the music, style and culture of reggae that they began to create their own sound – a unique blend of reggae, pop, indie infused with social commentary and positive messages. Inspired by the likes of Max Romeo, Twinkle Brothers, Peter Tosh and Bob Marley, their infectious and energetic grooves matched with their thought provoking lyrics, make this collective stand out so luminously in the contemporary British music scene. The boys have already made a credible name for themselves on the reggae scene, last year saw them being personally asked to support 2-tone legends The Specials on their 15 date UK arena tour playing 10,000 capacity venues and they have also previously supported the likes of Dawn Penn, Maxi Priest, John Holt, Neville Staple, The Buzzcocks, The Beat and Fun Lovin’ Criminals.
2012 has been a busy year for By The Rivers which first saw them recording their debut album and then jetting off to Europe supporting the likes of The Slackers and hitting the European festival scene. By The Rivers returned home to smash the UK festival circuit, creating big waves with promoters and punters alike, capturing the public in the frenzy. After performing at the likes of Secret Garden Party, One Love Festival, Larmer Tree and Summer Sundae, the first single from their forthcoming debut album, Don’t Say Love Me, was released on 4th August 2012 with a sellout show at the O2 Academy Leicester. 2013 is set to be a great year starting with the release of their second single from the album, ‘Take Control’ alongside its official music video, which reached over 10,000 views within its first few days of release. The highly anticipated debut album is soon to have its release date announced. We are all looking forward to the forthcoming releases, videos and tours and festivals. Make sure you keep up to date with this youthful ‘new age reggae’ band as they are really one to watch out for! They also have Fast and Frank (aka Radio Riddler) from the Fun Lovin’ Criminals to thank for a twist to the singles’ B-sides. Radio Riddler Productions specialise in dub and reggae remixes and have reworked a handful of By The Rivers songs.
